London Poppy Day marks 20 years with fundraising appeal across TfL network

Transport for London (TfL) will support the Royal British Legion’s 20th London Poppy Day on Thursday 29 October, with thousands of volunteers collecting donations across the capital’s transport network to raise money for serving and former members of the Armed Forces and their families.

The anniversary event will bring together more than 2,500 volunteers, including representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, for collections at stations across London between 07:00 and 19:00.

Last year’s appeal raised more than £1.4 million, exceeding its original £1 million target by over £400,000. The Royal British Legion hopes to surpass that total this year as London Poppy Day reaches its twentieth anniversary.

Passengers will also hear special announcements recorded by British singer and actress Dame Elaine Paige, encouraging them to contribute to the appeal. Royal British Legion bands will perform at selected stations, including Battersea Power Station, Blackfriars, Canary Wharf, Stratford and Westminster.

TfL is marking the occasion with poppy-branded buses, trains and London Cable Car cabins, alongside specially decorated roundels at selected bus stations and Underground and Overground platforms.

The transport network has supported the Royal British Legion’s fundraising efforts for two decades, helping raise tens of millions of pounds for the Armed Forces community. TfL is also a member of the Armed Forces Covenant and works to support veterans employed across its operations, including in engineering, driving, project management and bus control.

That commitment extends to employment opportunities. Earlier this month, Places for London, TfL’s property company, launched Building Beyond Service, a programme developed with the Ministry of Defence to help veterans move into construction careers.

Money raised through the Poppy Appeal supports a range of services, including physical and mental health recovery, financial assistance and employment advice.

London’s transport network will also observe the two-minute silence at 11:00 on Armistice Day, 11 November, remembering British and Commonwealth military and civilian personnel who lost their lives in the two World Wars.

Donations to London Poppy Day can be made using contactless payments at collection points throughout the network.
