UK weather to turn cooler after record June heat as another heatwave remains possible
After days of record-breaking temperatures across the UK, this week is expected to bring cooler conditions, scattered rain and lower humidity. Forecasters say the change in UK weather is likely to be temporary, with another spell of very hot weather still possible as July begins.
Last week saw new June temperature records set on three consecutive days, culminating in 37.3C at Santon Downham, Suffolk, breaking the previous June record of 35.6C, which had stood since 1976.
The intense heat has now eased as the high-pressure system responsible moves into eastern Europe. In its place, south-westerly winds from the Atlantic are bringing fresher air and areas of low pressure across the UK.
Monday is expected to remain largely dry with sunny spells, while temperatures across the Midlands and eastern England are forecast to reach a more comfortable 24C to 25C.
Conditions become more unsettled on Tuesday, with low pressure bringing showers and longer spells of rain, particularly across northern and western parts of the UK. Some areas could see heavy, thundery downpours.
A second Atlantic weather system is forecast to arrive later on Wednesday, with the strongest winds and heaviest rain more likely across Northern Ireland. By Thursday, the system is expected to move away towards Scandinavia, leaving much of the UK drier after early showers clear from Scotland.
South-east England is likely to stay warmer than other regions throughout the week, with temperatures reaching 25C or 26C. High pressure across southern Britain could also mean little or no rain, potentially allowing a dry opening week for Wimbledon.
Forecasters are also watching weather patterns developing over the Atlantic. High pressure extending from the Azores could settle across the UK and western Europe from the weekend into early next week.
While confidence remains lower at this stage, some forecast models indicate temperatures could climb high enough for another heatwave to develop in south-east England during early July. Some projections even suggest temperatures approaching 35C, although these longer-range forecasts remain uncertain.
The BBC reports that heatwaves in the UK are becoming more frequent and more intense as a result of human-induced climate change. Long-range forecasts also continue to indicate further significant hot spells remain possible during July and August.
