Around 30 minutes east of Austin, what was once a largely rural stretch of land has become home to facilities for X (formerly Twitter), SpaceX, and The Boring Company, each embedded within a growing development just off a two-lane highway. The move says as much about Musk’s shifting priorities as it does about the changing geography of American tech.
The site, near the small town of Bastrop, has raised eyebrows for more than just its size. What started with a few buildings and trailers has expanded to include company-branded shops, social spaces, and talk of a town-sized housing scheme for employees. Plans for over 100 homes have yet to materialise, but the ambition is clear. SpaceX, meanwhile, is pressing ahead with factory work nearby, and The Boring Company is also embedded on-site.

He cited frustrations with schooling laws and what he described as political overreach. Texas, with its lower taxes, looser development rules and more conservative culture, offered a different kind of freedom. What’s unfolded since has been met with a mixture of optimism and concern. Some locals welcome the surge in jobs and the economic boost that Musk’s operations bring to Bastrop County. The town’s population has already grown significantly, a trend accelerated by Austin’s booming tech sector and the remote work shift during the pandemic. Others, however, worry about the pace and nature of the change.
The environmental impact has been particularly scrutinised. The Boring Company was fined for water pollution violations, originally planning to dump wastewater in the Colorado River before opting to treat it locally following community pressure. That tension between rapid growth and long-term sustainability continues to shape how the project unfolds.
Although the development lies just outside Bastrop’s official limits, it still falls under the city’s influence when it comes to planning. Local authorities have responded by introducing new rules on housing density and public space, trying to keep the historical centre intact while allowing expansion on the outskirts. It’s a balancing act, especially as more large-scale investments are drawn to the area.

There’s a company shop, a small bar, even a play area. Yet on the ground, reactions appear more focused on practical matters – housing, infrastructure and how the area might look in five years. One resident likened the shift to wartime expansions in the 1940s, when military installations brought sudden population spikes to small towns. The difference now is who’s leading the charge.
SpaceX has already applied for a free trade zone designation to avoid tariffs on materials, something local officials support for the economic gain, despite the cost to county revenues. In return, the site is expected to bring more than 400 jobs and hundreds of millions in capital investment. A state grant has been awarded to help develop the site further.
Still, for many in Bastrop, it’s a watch-and-see situation. The initial charm of the area, its quiet roads, community businesses, and broad open land, hasn’t disappeared, but it’s under pressure. What’s certain is that Elon Musk’s Texas expansion has made this small patch of Central Texas a focal point of modern industry, and that has implications well beyond its borders.
