Farne Islands puffin-cam goes live

With the return of puffins to the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, the National Trust has switched on its live, remote cameras, offering “a front-row seat” to the seabirds as their breeding season gets underway. Streaming from this website, the footage allows people to view the “charming antics and every day lives” of the “much-loved” animals.

Guillemots will also take a “starring role” on the live camera feeds, as a second camera will be “trained to their antics” on the cliffs where they roost and nest.

The Farne Islands are an internationally important National Nature Reserve off the Northumberland coast. They are home to around 200,000 seabirds, including puffins, Arctic tens, guillemots, and kittiwakes. The islands as well as the birds who return every spring to breed, have been under the care of the National Trust for over a century. They have just re-opened for the season with visitor boats now landing on the island, giving people a chance to experience one of the nation’s “most spectacular” wildlife gatherings.

In June, puffins will go on a mini-tour of city centres though the Trust’s Window to the Wild project. They will be making appearances in city centres including Newcastle, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Belfast, and Bristol as part of the Festival of Nature.

After being affected by avian influenza in 2022 and 2023, with nearly 10,000 dead birds over two years, the islands have saw fewer than ten confirmed cases in 2025. This gives “cautious hope” that immunity is improving within the colony. The Trust says it will also be “keeping an eye out” for puffins fitted with tags part of its colour ringing programme to better understand the birds’ survival and movement.
