Albert Bridge to be closed for maintenance

Albert Bridge is set to be closed for five days, from 27th May until 2nd June, for “essential” maintenance. Contractors and council engineers will be carrying out the maintenance work to the carriageway’s deck panels. The 715 panels form part of the listed structure, requiring care to ensure the bridge remains in good shape.

During the closure, work will also take place on the expansion joints. At each end of Albert Bridge, there is a “movement joint” which allows it to move, expanding and contracting with changes in temperature and adjusting to the weight of vehicles and wind. A rubber section is placed between the joints to prevent water from reaching the bearings underneath the bridge. The rubber degrades over time and will be replaced during the closure.

Drivers are advised to allow more time for their journey and avoid Albert Bridge next week, between 7am on Tuesday 27th May and 6am on Monday 2nd June. Work will be performed during the summer half term to try and minimise disruption to drivers. Work will also be performed on the pavements but this will be done in stages to allow the footway to remain open to pedestrians. Cyclists can still pass but are encouraged to dismount.

Drivers will be diverted via Chelsea Bridge or Battersea Bridge.
