Buildings collapse after late-night quake shakes western Turkey

A late-night tremor struck western Turkey on Monday, toppling several already-damaged buildings in Balıkesir province and sending residents into the streets. Officials reported dozens of injuries, mostly from falls and panic, and said assessments were continuing as aftershocks rippled across the region. The Balıkesir earthquake registered magnitude 6.1 and was felt as far as Istanbul.

The epicentre was near Sındırgı, where three empty structures and a two-storey shop collapsed after earlier damage from summer quakes. With rain setting in, schools, mosques and sports halls were opened to people reluctant to return home.

Shaking was reported in Bursa, Manisa and İzmir. The Balıkesir earthquake followed a run of smaller shocks in recent months, underlining the strain on older buildings. Local officials said there were no confirmed fatalities but urged caution while engineers check cracked walls and stairwells.

Turkey straddles major fault lines and experiences frequent seismic activity. In 2023, a far stronger quake in the south killed tens of thousands and devastated 11 provinces, a reminder of the risks facing dense urban areas.
