Hammersmith & Fulham revives cargo bike scheme with discounts worth up to £1,800
Residents, workers and students in Hammersmith & Fulham are once again being offered financial support to switch to cargo bikes as the borough relaunches a cargo bike discount scheme aimed at reducing reliance on cars for shorter journeys.
The renewed initiative allows eligible participants to save up to £1,800 over nine months while testing and eventually purchasing a cargo bike through the borough’s Try Before You Bike programme.
Cargo bikes are designed to carry heavy loads of up to around 200kg, making them suitable for transporting children, shopping and other bulky items. The council hopes the scheme will encourage more people to replace short car journeys, including school runs and local errands, with cycling.
The funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is open to Hammersmith & Fulham residents, students and anyone who works or operates a business within the borough.
Applicants can browse available cargo bike models through the Try Before You Bike website before completing an application and confirming their eligibility.
Successful participants receive home delivery of their chosen bike, along with guidance from a cycling instructor to help them become familiar with riding safely on local roads.
At the end of the nine-month period, participants can choose to buy the bike outright, continue making monthly payments or transfer the remaining balance to a cycle-to-work scheme where eligible.
The relaunch forms part of the borough’s wider efforts to encourage active travel and improve cycling infrastructure.
Hammersmith & Fulham says it now has 175 cycle hangars across the borough, providing space for more than 1,000 bicycles for residents who do not have secure storage at home.
The council has also introduced its first adapted cycle hangars, designed to accommodate riders with additional mobility needs, while further installations are planned as demand continues to grow. More than 3,000 residents are currently waiting for a cycle hangar space.
The cargo bike offer adds to the council’s broader programme aimed at making cycling a more practical option for everyday travel while helping reduce traffic and emissions across the borough.
