VE Day 80: How the City of London Marked a Defining Anniversary

On 8th May 2025, the City of London marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day 80) with a series of poignant tributes and commemorations. The Lord Mayor of London, Alastair King, delivered a heartfelt address at St Paul’s Cathedral, honouring the sacrifices of those who secured peace in Europe. He emphasised the enduring significance of this day, stating,

“We owe them the duty to remain true to all they fought for – to be vigilant in defence of our freedoms, and steadfast in our defence of the nation.”

The City paid homage by illuminating iconic landmarks such as Guildhall, Mansion House, and Tower Bridge in red, white, and blue, symbolising unity and remembrance. These VE Day 80 illuminations served as a visual testament to the City’s commitment to honouring its history and those who served.

St Paul’s Cathedral, a symbol of resilience during the Blitz, hosted a service reflecting on the courage and determination of the wartime generation. The Lord Mayor’s speech also highlighted the contributions of Sir Winston Churchill, acknowledging his pivotal role in achieving victory in Europe.

As part of the broader commemorations on VE Day 80, the City of London Corporation encouraged businesses to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, reinforcing support for serving personnel, cadets, and reservists. This initiative underscores the City’s ongoing commitment to the armed forces community.
