Seoul hit by heaviest snowfall on record
The South Korean capital, Seoul, has been blanketed by its heaviest November snowfall since records began in 1907, over a century ago. It was covered with at least 16cm of snow on Wednesday, 27th November, breaking the previous record of 12.4cm which hit the city in November 1972.
This caused significant disruption, not just in Seoul, but across South Korea. Local media reported that flights had been grounded, roads were closed, and transport services were delayed.
A weather-related traffic accident is reported to have caused at least one fatality near Seoul.
Youn Ki-han, who heads the Seoul Meteorology Forecast Division, spoke with AFP new agency. The heavy snowfall, he said, was due to strong westerly winds and a “significant temperature difference between the sea surface and the cold air.”
The cold weather came as the region saw a period of relatively mild temperatures in the autumn.
“Just last week, I felt that the November autumn was a bit warm, but in just one week it feels like it’s turned into a winter wonderland, which was quite a contrast,” according to businessman Bae Joo-han. “So I came out onto the streets today to enjoy the first snowfall of this winter.”
