Palantir AI contract with Scotland Yard may be opposed by Khan
Sadiq Khan may push back against Scotland Yard using Palantir AI technology to process criminal intelligence. The Mayor says he has raised “concerns about using public money to support firms who act contrary to London’s values.”
Khan’s office made the statement after it was reported in the Guardian that Palantir, which has also been used by Donald Trump in his immigration crackdowns as well as the Israeli military, has been in talks with the Metropolitan Police over a range of contracts that could cost tens of millions of pounds.
Palantir AI systems have been demonstrated to senior officers in the intelligence division of the Metropolitan Police last month, with intelligence staff also tasked with finding systems that could be automated by AI to improve productivity.
Any procurement by the Met of over £500,000 must go through the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime for scrutiny as well as approval, giving Khan some say over a potential contract. This comes after over 330,000 have signed petitions calling for Palantir AI to be blocked or dropped from UK contracts.
The national government has a deal of £330 million for medical data to be processed by Palantir in the NHS, as well as a £240 million deal with the Ministry of Defence.
“We can’t comment on live procurement processes,” a spokesperson for the Mayor said. “However, as a general point the mayor would have concerns about using public money to support firms who act contrary to London’s values.”
