Unlimited London bus and tram travel for £1.75 launches on weekends this summer
Londoners and visitors will be able to make unlimited bus and tram journeys for the price of a single fare on weekends during the summer holidays under a new travel offer introduced by the Mayor of London and TfL.
The new Weekend Hopper scheme runs from 25 July until 31 August, allowing passengers travelling on Saturdays, Sundays, and the August bank holiday Monday to continue using London’s buses and trams all day after paying just one £1.75 fare. The initiative is designed to encourage more people to explore the capital during the school holidays while making public transport more affordable for families and visitors.
Under the offer, passengers can board as many buses and trams as they like throughout the day without paying additional fares once their first journey has been charged. TfL estimates that a family of two adults travelling with two children under 16 could save up to £7 in a single day if making three or more journeys, with even greater savings over an entire weekend.
The special summer scheme builds on London’s existing Hopper fare, which already allows unlimited bus and tram journeys within one hour of the first trip. That offer will continue after the Weekend Hopper promotion ends.
Bus and tram fares also remain frozen at £1.75 after the Mayor extended the current fare freeze until 1 November 2026, keeping prices unchanged since March 2023.
Families travelling during August will also benefit from additional savings through the Government’s Great British Summer Savings Scheme.
Children under 16 visiting London who do not hold a Zip Oyster photocard will be able to travel free on buses throughout August. Young Londoners aged under 18 who already qualify for free travel with a valid Zip Oyster photocard will continue using their existing passes as normal.
The August bank holiday, when the Weekend Hopper also applies, coincides with the 60th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival, one of the capital’s busiest weekends for public transport.
TfL hopes the discounted travel will encourage more people to visit attractions across the city using buses and trams rather than travelling by car.
Alongside the fare offer, passengers may spot specially wrapped frog-themed buses operating on routes 49 and 295, while TfL has also promoted a selection of leisure bus routes connecting museums, parks and other visitor destinations across London.
The capital’s expanding Superloop network is also continuing to grow, with the express bus system now covering more than 200 kilometres across outer London. Additional routes are planned later this year as TfL continues investing in bus services.
Officials say buses remain one of London’s most accessible forms of public transport, with the vast majority of households located within walking distance of a bus stop. Every route is operated by low-floor vehicles designed to improve accessibility, while more than 3,000 zero-emission buses are now operating across the network.
Passengers travelling during periods of hot weather are being encouraged to carry drinking water and look out for fellow travellers. TfL says reflective roofs, insulation, opening windows and air-cooling systems on newer buses are all helping improve comfort during warmer conditions.
