PlayStation to stop releasing new games on disc from 2028 as Sony moves to digital-only distribution
Sony will stop physical disc releases on new PlayStation games from January 2028, confirming a major shift in how titles are distributed across its gaming platform.
After that date, new PlayStation games will only be available through the PlayStation Store or as digital download codes sold via retailers, meaning players will no longer be able to buy newly released disc-based editions.
In a statement on its official PlayStation blog, Sony said: “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”
The company added that the change reflects how players now access content, stating: “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”
Sony also confirmed the transition will not affect existing physical games. Titles released on disc before January 2028 will continue to be supported in physical format.
The announcement comes as attention builds around the upcoming exclusively digital release of Grand Theft Auto VI, a title widely expected to become one of the most significant entertainment launches in recent years.
Some players reacted negatively online, with concerns focused on the loss of physical ownership and the disappearance of resale and secondhand markets for games sold without discs. On YouTube, gamer and content creator Conkerax said: “It’s a catastrophe.”
Industry analysts say the shift has been underway for years. Piers Harding-Rolls at Ampere Analysis said: “The purchasing trends of gamers are clear.”
He added that in 2013, when the PlayStation 4 launched, only 13% of game sales were digital, rising to nearly 80% in 2025.
Harding-Rolls also highlighted wider concerns around the transition, including access to older physical games on future consoles, the ability to collect physical titles, and long-term game preservation. He noted the move would also affect specialist retailers and the secondhand market.
The change has also intensified speculation around Sony’s next console generation. Daniel Ahmad at Niko Partners said the announcement “pretty much confirms PS6 will be digital only.”
Sony began shifting toward digital-first distribution with the PlayStation 5, released in 2020, which introduced a disc-less version of the console as part of its product lineup.
