Arsenal reach second after away win over Brentford

Arsenal came from a goal down to win against Brentford in 2025’s first Premier League game. This gives the Gunners a boost in their hopes for the title.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo put the Bees in front after just 13 minutes before former Manchester City player Gabriel Jesus equalised with his sixth goal in four matches in the 29th minute.

Strikes from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli secured the lead for Arsenal as they take all three points from the fixture.

The BBC calls it a “vindication for manager Mikel Arteta” who left Germany international Kai Havertz out of the squad due to illness. A 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri made his Premier League debut.

The win puts Arsenal back up to second, above Nottingham Forest and Chelsea and six points behind leaders Liverpool. Brentford meanwhile are down in 12th place.

A sloppy mistake from Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard allowed Brentford to take the lead as the Norwegian gave the ball away in midfield. Mikkel Damsgaard intercepted the pass, sliding a through ball to allow Brentford to take the lead, beating David Raya. A Gabriel Jesus header tied the game after Thomas Partey had his shot deflected.

The absence of Bukayo Saka due to injury has also seen the Gunners struggle at times, especially in the first half. But two goals in three minutes after half-time renewed their title hopes.
