20,000 children run Mini London Marathon in central London

Around 20,000 young runners gathered in central London on Saturday for the Mini London Marathon, filling the route from Horse Guards Parade to The Mall with school colours, early starts and a steady sense of anticipation.

Open to children from Reception through to Year 12, the event forms part of the wider London Marathon weekend. Participants could take on either a one-mile or 1.6-mile course, moving at their own pace across the centre of the city.

Many arrived in school groups, some in matching kit, others simply keen to be there. For a number of runners, it was a first experience of taking part in a large organised event in central London.

More than 600 schools were involved, with teachers describing the build-up across playgrounds and classrooms during the week. Training sessions in local parks fed into the day, giving pupils a clear focus and a shared sense of occasion.

Along the route, the atmosphere carried a mix of excitement and nerves. Some children stayed close to friends as they ran, while others pushed on at their own pace, keeping an eye on personal times or simply aiming to finish.

The Mini London Marathon has become a regular part of the city’s sporting calendar, linking schools across London to one of its most visible annual events.

Further details about the Mini London Marathon and school participation can be found via the official organisers.
