Zoox robotaxi launches in Las Vegas
Amazon’s Zoox has launched its robotaxi service in Las Vegas with rides initially offered free of charge, before an app is launched. The service is currently limited to a number of pre-determined locations. This comes following months of testing. With the Zoox app, rides are initially going to be free, allowing people to travel easily in and around the Las Vegas Strip.
The company indicated that rides will be from “several destination” as opposed to anywhere around the city. At the moment, that includes Resorts World Las Vegas, AREA15, Topgolf, and a number of other resorts and entertainment locations, with a focus being on attractions that see high tourist traffic, instead of the whole city.
Resorts World Las Vegas and AREA15 will feature dedicated pickup and drop-off areas along with a Zoox Concierge who will “welcome you, walk you through the app, and answer questions, ensuring your first ride feels effortless.”
To ensure riders jump into the correct robotaxi, a license plate number will appear on the app along with an estimated pickup time. It will give real-time arrival updates and a post-ride summary where the rider can provide feedback.
This, Zoox said, is what it is especially interested in as it will allow it to know how the launch has been going. It hopes for people to become familiar with the service and “share their feedback with us before we scale.”
Free rides hope to generate interest but the company has confirmed that it plans to charge in the future. Riders can also get assistance via the app if something goes wrong and a dedicated help button will be on the interior display.
