Bus safety measures announced by TfL to cut deaths & serious injuries

People travelling on London’s buses could see a range of new safety and accessibility improvements over the next decade after TfL unveiled the next phase of its Bus Safety Standard. The new requirements will apply to buses entering service up to 2033 and form part of TfL’s wider ambition to eliminate deaths involving buses by 2030.

The announcement comes as TfL continues monitoring road safety trends across the capital, with recent figures showing a mixed picture for road deaths and serious injuries in London. The bus safety upgrades sit alongside broader efforts to improve walking and wheeling infrastructure across the capital.

Changes inside vehicles include improved lighting, clearer safety information, and redesigned tip-up seats that automatically fold upright when not being used, helping to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls.

TfL will also introduce new technology aimed at protecting vulnerable road users. Future buses will be fitted with systems that prevent a vehicle from moving off if a pedestrian or cyclist is detected immediately in front of the bus. Additional driver assistance systems will provide visual, audio and touch alerts designed to identify signs of fatigue.

The updated standard also includes accessibility improvements. These include enhanced communication between wheelchair users and drivers, alongside improved audio systems linked to ramp deployment.

The announcement comes after figures released through a Freedom of Information request showed there were 15,390 incidents that resulted in bus damage during 2025, following nearly 16,000 incidents recorded in 2024. In 2025, 10 people were killed in collisions involving a bus. TfL said that while any death on London’s roads was unacceptable, this was the lowest annual figure since 2021.
