Asteroid mining could help build a sustainable Mars colony
A future Mars colony may need to look beyond the Red Planet for one of its most basic requirements: metal. Researchers at EPFL in Switzerland have modelled whether asteroid mining could form part of a supply network delivering construction materials to Mars, potentially reducing the need to send every tonne of hardware from Earth.
The study, Asteroid Mining to Sustain a Mars Colony: A Logistics Point of View, was published as an arXiv preprint in April 2026. It examines asteroid mining as a logistics problem rather than simply a search for valuable resources.
That distinction matters. A permanent settlement would require far more than food, water and life-support equipment. Habitats, machinery, tools, vehicles and replacement parts would all require substantial quantities of metal. Continually launching those materials from Earth would impose a significant transport burden, particularly when missions to Mars can take months.
The EPFL team, led by Serena Suriano alongside Shamil Biktimirov, Dmitry Pritykin and Anton Ivanov, investigated supply chains linking Mars with metallic asteroids. Their model considered current spacecraft capabilities, the energy required for different journeys, the amount of material that could be extracted and the propellant needed to move between destinations. One of the more important ideas in the research is that not every asteroid would serve the same purpose. Metallic asteroids could provide iron and other useful materials, while carbonaceous asteroids could potentially supply water and carbon-bearing resources for producing propellant. That could reduce the amount of fuel spacecraft would need to carry from Earth.
The researchers used a multi-objective optimisation approach to identify possible supply chains and assessed whether selected asteroids could be reached within the capabilities of contemporary spacecraft. The study also considers using asteroid-derived metal to manufacture structures such as habitats and rovers directly on Mars. (arXiv)
This remains a feasibility study, not a blueprint for an imminent mining operation. Extracting and processing asteroid material remotely, transporting it across interplanetary distances and establishing the necessary industrial infrastructure would all present formidable challenges.
But the research changes the question. Instead of asking how Earth could continually supply a Mars settlement, scientists are examining whether a future space-based supply network could provide some of the raw materials itself.
For a long-term human presence beyond Earth, that could prove just as important as the rockets that get people there.
