Sickle Cell disease to be explored by theatre performance
A “powerful and thought-provoking” theatre performance will explore the realities of care for those with sickle cell disease. Crescent Cell, Sickle Moon will be jointly hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the West London HCC on Wednesday 6th May from 5pm at the Wolfson Lecture in Hammersmith Hospital.
The play, written by Mojisola Adebayo, directed by Gail Babb and produced by the Sickle Cell Theatre Collective in association with Tamasha, imagines care for those with sickle cell disease in a parallel universe, raising “important questions about pain, trust, dignity, and compassion within a hospital setting.”
It was co-created with those living with the disease, as well as haematologists and theatre-makers, drawing on research from the Exploring Practices of Care study, offering a rare chance for healthcare professionals to “to step back and reflect on what compassionate, effective hospital care for sickle cell crises could and should look like.”
Trust staff, those living with the disease, as well as the wider public are all welcome to attend the performance. It is “generously supported” by Arts Council England, the Wellcome Trust, Queen Mary University of London, the Curriers Millennium Healthcare Bursary and HaemSTAR.
