TfL offers free Santander Cycles memberships to Knowledge of London candidates
People studying for the Knowledge of London will soon be able to use Santander Cycles free of charge after Transport for London announced a new scheme aimed at supporting future licensed taxi drivers.
From 20 June, Knowledge candidates can request a free annual Santander Cycles subscription, giving them unlimited rides of up to 60 minutes across the capital. TfL says the offer will provide a cost-effective alternative to travelling by car or motorcycle while candidates prepare for their examinations.
More than 1,300 people are currently working towards the Knowledge, the qualification required for all licensed London taxi drivers. The programme involves learning thousands of streets and points of interest across central London.
TfL says the initiative has been developed through collaboration between its Cycle Hire and Licensing and Regulation teams and forms part of wider efforts to support the next generation of licensed taxi drivers.
Interest in the Knowledge continues to increase. Applications have risen by nearly 70 per cent in recent years and are now at their highest level in a decade, according to TfL. The organisation describes the Knowledge as the world’s most respected taxi driver qualification and a symbol of dedication and service to Londoners.
Recent changes have also made the process more accessible and efficient. TfL says the average time needed to complete the Knowledge has been reduced to around three years, helping more people enter the licensed taxi trade.
Santander Cycles has operated across London since 2010 and has recorded more than 150 million hires. TfL says the scheme continues to support affordable and sustainable travel across the capital and remains London’s only docked cycle hire network.
The new offer is intended to help Knowledge candidates reduce training costs while building practical experience of London’s road network during their studies.
