Fulham gardeners prepare to put their best blooms on show

Fulham gardeners will have the chance to put their flowers, fruit, vegetables, and homemade produce in the spotlight when the Fulham Horticultural Society returns for its annual show on Saturday 12 September. The event, being held at All Saints Church Hall on Fulham High Street, will bring together produce grown across the borough in allotments, gardens, balconies, patios and even window boxes.

Visitors can see the results of this year’s growing season from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, with almost 80 classes spanning horticulture, cooking and creative work. The society is staging its first show since taking a break last year, following its centenary celebrations in 2024.

The summer’s extreme heat has made growing conditions difficult for some crops. Beans and raspberries have been among those affected, according to society chair Eddie Robinson, while tomatoes, squash and potatoes have proved more resilient.

Robinson, who has chaired the society since 2007, expects domestic and handicraft entries to feature more strongly this year alongside the traditional flowers and vegetables.

The horticultural classes include roses, chrysanthemums, fuchsia and dahlias, as well as fruit and vegetables ranging from apples and rhubarb to parsnips, beetroot and the competition for the heaviest marrow.

Residents can compete for prizes including best courgette cake, fruit tart and cheese biscuits, while chutneys, pickles and homemade liqueurs also have their own categories. Photography, greeting cards, recycled creations and crochet are among the creative classes.

Children under 16 can enter junior categories, including vegetable figures, miniature gardens, cupcakes and space-themed artwork.

Entries are staged between 10am and noon before judging takes place. Matthew Pottage, head of horticulture for the Royal Parks and a BBC Gardeners’ Question Time expert, will present the prizes after the judging.
