Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung turns the CLE into a 646 hp track-focused special

Mercedes-AMG has taken the CLE Coupé to an entirely different level with the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a road-legal two-door built around one idea: sharper driving dynamics.

The second model in Mercedes-Benz’s exclusive Mythos series, the Spezialanfertigung combines a 646 hp (475 kW) 4.0-litre V8 biturbo with rear-wheel drive, a substantially lighter body and a chassis developed for precision.

Underneath the dramatically widened bodywork is AMG’s M177 EVO V8, producing 850 Nm between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. Its flat-plane crankshaft reduces rotating mass and contributes to a more responsive engine, while a bespoke exhaust system developed with Akrapovič uses titanium to help keep weight down.

Perhaps the biggest transformation is the drivetrain. AMG has removed the donor car’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and sends power exclusively to the rear wheels. An electronically controlled limited-slip differential manages torque between the rear wheels, while the adapted launch-control system helps the car reach 200 km/h in just 11.4 seconds. Top speed is 310 km/h.

The chassis is equally serious. A four-way adjustable coilover suspension, developed with KW automotive, allows independent adjustment of low- and high-speed compression and rebound. That gives owners scope to tailor the car for road driving or circuit work.

Weight saving runs throughout the car. Compared with the donor vehicle, around 170 kg has been removed, while carbon fibre is used extensively across the body. The car is 60 mm wider at both the front and rear, sits on 20-inch wheels with enormous 305-section front and 335-section rear tyres, and uses ceramic brakes measuring up to 420 mm at the front.

There is also genuine aerodynamic hardware. A manually adjustable front diffuser has Street and Race settings, while the rear wing can be adjusted for circuit use. Together with the underbody and fender aero, the system generates more than 250 kg of downforce at top speed.

Inside, AMG has stripped away weight from the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, as well as equipment. Rear seats and acoustic insulation are gone, racing bucket seats are standard, and an optional six-point harness package takes the track focus even further. Each car is rebuilt by hand in Affalterbach on a CLE 53 platform.

Only 30 examples will be produced, and the car had already sold out before its world premiere.
