LEGO has teamed up with McLaren giving F1 driver Lando Norris a unique experience. The racer has been enlisted to complete a lap of the iconic British racetrack, Silverstone, in a 1:1 scale McLaren P1.
The life-size replica of the car is made from 342,817 “LEGO Technic elements” and weighs around 1,220kg. It features “some truly remarkable displays of engineering” McLaren says. It includes fully functioning steering wheel, the first LEGO built car ever to do so. This makes it able to take on the tricky corners of the circuit.
Power comes from an electric motor with LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery that allows it to further than any other LEGO car before it.
The built process came to life with 23 specialist from both companies. They spent 8,344 hours in development and construction and used 393 different types of elements.
With the car fully assembled, all that was left was to take it to the track. Being a replica of a McLaren supercar, it was only fitting that a McLaren Formula 1 driver was put behind the wheel. Lando Norris took on the twists and turns of the 3.66 mile track, finishing a lap around Silverstone, the home of British racing.

“Having worked on the original P1 programme for McLaren, it’s amazing to see so many of the elements from the original McLaren P1 brought to life so realistically by the LEGO Technic team for the full-scale model,” Ben Gulliver, Test & Development Director, McLaren Automotive. “The car was an icon of its time. I hope that through this collaboration with the LEGO Group, we are able to inspire the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation.”A 1:8 scale McLaren P1 set is available at the website priced at £389.99 / €449.99 / $449.99.
