Guildhall School Students to Benefit from £120,000 City of London Corporation Scholarships
Guildhall School of Music & Drama students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds are set to benefit from a significant financial boost, thanks to scholarships funded by the City of London Corporation’s Education Board. Over the next two years, the board has committed £30,000 per year until 2026 to support these students at the prestigious institution.
The funding will be divided to address different needs. Higher education students will receive grants to help cover living costs, while those in the Guildhall Young Artists network of performing and production arts centres will get support for tuition fees. This initiative aims to bridge the financial gap and make world-class education more accessible.
Guildhall School of Music & Drama, provided by the City Corporation, stands as a beacon of cultural contribution to London and beyond. Located in the heart of the Square Mile, it boasts a vibrant international community of musicians, actors, and production artists. The institution’s reputation is unparalleled, having been ranked as the number one school for Arts, Drama & Music by the Complete University Guide 2025. Additionally, it is among the top five institutions globally for Music and Performing Arts, according to the QS World University Rankings 2024, and it leads the Guardian University Guide 2024 music league table.
The School is celebrated not only for its professional training in partnership with distinguished artists and companies but also for its commitment to lifelong learning. It offers inspiring training for children, young people, adult learners, and professionals in both creative and business fields.
The City of London Corporation, one of the UK’s largest funders of heritage and cultural activities, invests over £130m annually in various world-class cultural and heritage institutions. These include the Barbican Centre, Tower Bridge, Guildhall Art Gallery, London Metropolitan Archives, and Keats House, among others. The Corporation also supports the London Symphony Orchestra and the Museum of London.
Naresh Sonpar, Chair of the City Corporation’s Education Board, emphasised the importance of social mobility in their mission. “We are passionate about social mobility and dedicated to a vibrant and thriving City, supporting a diverse and sustainable London, within a globally successful UK. Achieving greater social mobility is a central part of this, and something we wish to see championed at every level of our organisation. Given the pressing concern surrounding the attainment gap between disadvantaged students and their peers, scholarships are vital in bridging that divide. First class education is something that should be available to everyone no matter their background or ability.”
The City Corporation’s commitment to education extends through its sponsorship of ten high-performing academies across Hackney, Islington, Newham, and Southwark via the City of London Academies Trust. It also oversees one maintained primary school in the City of London and four independent schools. Impressively, five of these academies hold an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating, with two more rated ‘good’ with ‘outstanding features’.
Professor Sean Gregory, Vice Principal and Director of Innovation & Engagement at Guildhall School, expressed gratitude for the scholarships. “We are grateful for these scholarships, which will allow us to provide support where the need is greatest, particularly to students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. The grant will also enable us to strengthen progression opportunities to Guildhall School, especially for pupils from the City of London Academies Trust, aligning the School and the City Corporation’s dedication to social mobility, as well as helping more broadly to widen access to Guildhall School programmes.”
The City of London Corporation remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant, thriving, and inclusive city, supporting education and cultural initiatives that benefit the community and the nation. For more information, visit the City of London Corporation’s website.
