Congestion in London worst in Europe

London’s roads, are once again Europe’s worse for congestion in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year, according to analysis. Transportation analytics firm Inrix said that London’s drivers spent 101 hours sitting in traffic in 2024, a 2% increase over 2023.

Paris followed with 97 hours followed by Dublin at 81. Globally London is ranked fifth for congestion with Istanbul taking the top spot.

The ranking looks at the length of delays, weighed against a city’s population to determine the level of congestion in a city.

In Britain, Bristol was second with 65 hours per driver, followed by Leeds (60 hours) and Manchester which climbed from 54 to 61 hours.

The report’s author Bob Pishue said that while there had been a slight increase in congestion, it has “overall remained steady.” The delays in London were said to be as a result of “concentration of population, employment and economic activity.”

“We are committed to making sure Londoners can move around the capital as safely, sustainably and efficiently as possible,” a TfL spokesperson said. “We support the movement of everyone across London and our investment in walking, cycling and public transport is making it easier to choose sustainable ways of travelling, helping to cut congestion. Our network includes some of the busiest roads in the country and we continue to invest in world-leading programmes to make sure roads are used as efficiently as possible.”
