Golden Lane Leisure Centre closure moves users to alternative venues in City of London
Golden Lane Leisure Centre in the City of London closed earlier than planned this week after operator Fusion Lifestyle entered administration, leaving regular users without access to facilities while a £10.4 million refurbishment moves ahead. The City of London Corporation has confirmed where groups will now be based and how services will continue during the closure. The move affects people who rely on the centre week by week, making continuity of services a priority as the building work begins.
Individual users are able to access nearby facilities including Finsbury Leisure Centre and Ironmonger Row Baths at no extra cost while the centre remains closed. Both sites are within walking distance and are expected to handle most of the displaced demand during the refurbishment period. The Golden Lane Leisure Centre closure has required a rapid shift in how services are delivered across the area.
Organised groups have been relocated across a number of venues. Swimming sessions for Anaconda club members and children with special educational needs and disabilities will take place at the City of London School for Girls, while CitySport at City St George’s, University of London, is hosting indoor sports, fitness sessions and activities for older people. Where possible, the same instructors will continue to run sessions to maintain continuity.
Other leisure centres across London are continuing to invest in new facilities, including recent work Latchmere Leisure Centre, showing how provision can vary across the city depending on local priorities and investment.
The City of London Corporation said it will continue to work directly with affected groups to manage the transition. Public health programmes, including exercise referral schemes and weight management support, will be considered on a case-by-case basis following GP referral.
Chair of the Community and Children’s Services Committee, Helen Fentimen, said the priority had been to ensure that no groups were left without options during the closure. She said the Corporation had worked with local partners to keep programmes running while a major investment is carried out to improve the facility.
Investment in leisure facilities has continued across London in recent years, with several centres due to benefit from new partnerships and upgrades as part of longer-term plans to modernise public spaces.
Details of the temporary arrangements are available through the City of London Corporation.
If you use local leisure facilities in London, changes like this can happen quickly, and knowing where services move can make a real difference.
