Grant won by Lyric Theatre to improve stage & sound
The Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith has won a grant of over £500,000 to upgrade backstage areas, improve sound, and convert to full LED stage lighting. £534,227 of aid the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Creative Foundations Fund, provides a “major boost to one of the borough’s key cultural venues,” Hammersmith & City Council said in a press release.
“We’re absolutely delighted, it will make a huge impact,” executive director Amy Belson said. The council, which supports the theatre, it is said it is part of its “efforts to make the borough the best place to live, work and socialise.”
The grant from the government will help to address “urgent” capital work as part of the Lyric Theatre’s Light Up The Lyric to celebrate its 130th “birthday year.” This includes “important” upgrades to the backstage area, an improved sound system, and a switch to energy efficient LED stage lights.
In total, two dozen museums, libraries, and cultural venues across the capital have benefited from a share of a £30 million pot to support infrastructure, fund rebuilding work, and upgrade technology.
“These improvements will ensure we can continue to produce world class work, both on-stage and off-stage, for years to come,” Belson added.
