FPNs issued to over 1,300 cyclists by City Police

City of London Police have revealed that over 1,300 fixed penalty notices (FPNs)  have been issued to cyclists for jumping red lights between the start of April 2025 and the end of March 2026. That is double the 643 issued in the same period over the previous financial year.

The force says it is issuing an average of 25 FPNs every week for cyclists going through red lights.

City of London Police hosted the biggest cycle roadshow on 16th April outside Mansion House. This is part of its “education, engagement and enforcement work” it said. During the event, the force said, cyclists “going through red lights and endangering pedestrians and other road users” were invited to attend the roadshow and speak with those in the visually impaired community.”

Those who refused to attend would receive a £50 fine. Officers were joined by people who are visually impaired and blind who explained to cyclists who jump red lights how their actions affect their ability to safely cross the road.

Figures also reveal that the cycle team has seized nearly one illegal e-bike on a daily basis. There were 351 illegal e-bikes seized during the last financial year compared with 326 in the same period the previous year.

City of London relaunched its cycling capability in 2023, hoping to “help combat phone snatching, as well as other offences like drug and road offences.” The Cycle Response Unit, it said, is “highly visible, approachable and able to quickly get through areas inaccessible to vehicles.”
