NASA Moves Ahead With Moon Base as Commercial Landers Prepare for Lunar Missions

NASA is moving closer to establishing a long-term presence including a base on the Moon, with commercial partners preparing a new generation of landers and technology for missions that will help build the infrastructure needed for future operations.

The agency’s Moon Base plans centre on the lunar South Pole and are designed to support scientific research, technology development and, eventually, sustained human activity. More than 20 robotic landings are planned during the first phase of the programme, running through 2029, with missions intended to test systems, deliver equipment and gather information before astronauts arrive.

Four commercial companies are developing spacecraft for upcoming deliveries: Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, and Voyager Technologies.

Blue Origin is progressing with its Blue Moon MK1 lander, Endurance, which has completed environmental testing including a thermal vacuum test at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The spacecraft is being prepared for further integration work and will demonstrate landing, lunar-environment monitoring and autonomous technologies.

Firefly Aerospace is developing Blue Ghost Mission 2, a larger spacecraft intended to operate on the far side of the Moon. Combined with the company’s Elytra orbital vehicle, the system will support both orbital and surface activities. The mission is planned to carry three NASA payloads and investigate the far side’s geology and its unusually radio-quiet environment.

Intuitive Machines is preparing its third Nova-C mission, IM-3. Its Trinity lander will carry NASA, commercial and civil payloads, while the mission will also deploy the company’s Altus-1 lunar communications satellite. Among its objectives is an investigation of Reiner Gamma, a distinctive magnetic feature associated with a lunar swirl.

Voyager Technologies is testing its Griffin-1 infrastructure lander, scheduled for launch in late 2026. The mission is expected to carry a large commercial payload, including NASA instruments mounted on Astrolab’s FLIP rover, supporting research into lunar mobility and longer-duration surface operations.

NASA is also adapting technology for surviving the lunar night, including power and avionics systems being developed with Northrop Grumman. The demonstrations are intended to test equipment capable of supporting lunar assets through harsh and prolonged periods of darkness.

Together, the missions point to a shift from individual lunar visits towards building the logistics, power, communications and surface capabilities required for a lasting presence on the Moon.
