500,000-year-old elephant bone tool found at Boxgrove rewrites Europe’s prehistoric technology timeline
Archaeologists have confirmed that a bone tool uncovered at the Boxgrove archaeological site in West Sussex is the oldest known elephant bone tool ever identified in Europe, dating to almost 500,000 years ago. The discovery was made by researchers from University College London (UCL) and the Natural History Museum, London, with the findings published in the journal Science Advances.
The study suggests the object was crafted by Homo heidelbergensis or early Neanderthals, offering fresh evidence that prehistoric humans in Britain were selecting unusual materials to manufacture specialised tools. Rather than acting as a heavy hammer, researchers conclude the implement was designed to maintain and reshape stone handaxes, demonstrating sophisticated knowledge of both raw materials and stone-working techniques.
The fossilised object was recovered during excavations at Boxgrove near Chichester in the early 1990s but was not initially recognised as a tool. Only after researchers re-examined artefacts from the site using modern analytical techniques did its true purpose become clear.
Measuring around 11 centimetres long, the triangular fragment consists mainly of dense cortical bone, indicating it came from either an elephant or a mammoth. While the exact species cannot be identified because only part of the original bone survives, the unusually thick material made it well suited for repeated use.
Researchers combined 3D scanning with electron microscopy to examine the artefact. They identified impact marks, shaped notches and microscopic flint fragments embedded within the surface, showing the object had repeatedly struck stone tools. These characteristics indicate it functioned as a prehistoric retoucher, a tool used during knapping to restore worn cutting edges by removing small flakes from stone implements.
Because bone absorbs impacts differently from stone, it allows greater precision when refining handaxes without causing excessive damage. Elephant bone, with its especially dense outer layer, would have been more durable than many other animal bones available in southern England at the time.
Lead author Simon Parfitt said the find demonstrates the ingenuity of early human populations, who recognised the value of a rare material and adapted it for specialised use. Co-author Dr. Silvia Bello added that repeatedly preserving and using elephant bone reflects complex planning and an advanced understanding of tool production.
The discovery extends both the age and northern geographic range of known elephant bone technology in Europe, providing new insight into the technological abilities of prehistoric communities living in Britain nearly half a million years ago.
