Dispensaire Français: Supporting Hammersmith’s French-Speaking Community for 160 Years
Hammersmith-based charity Dispensaire Français has been a vital resource for French-speaking residents in the UK, offering medical, social, and administrative support for an impressive 160 years. With Hammersmith & Fulham home to one of the largest French communities in the capital, the charity plays a crucial role in the lives of many.
According to the most recent census, around 5,100 residents of Hammersmith & Fulham were born in France, representing almost 3% of the borough’s population. This longstanding connection to French-speaking individuals is deeply rooted in history, with many French refugees settling in West London during the 18th and 19th centuries. “There is a huge French population here… it’s a historical fact,” said Director Jerome Walczak, who emphasised that Hammersmith is a natural base for their work.

The charity currently operates from 184 Hammersmith Road and assists approximately 40 patients weekly. Its small yet dedicated team — Jerome, nurse Anne Castellani, and secretary Fanny Dulin — work alongside 70 volunteer doctors and specialists to deliver nearly 1,200 consultations annually. These services cater to vulnerable French speakers who often struggle with language barriers, limited financial resources, or unfamiliarity with the NHS system.
Affordable Support and Community Outreach
Dispensaire Français offers a range of services tailored to the needs of its clients. For a flat rate of £10, individuals who are not registered with the NHS or those seeking a second opinion can access consultations in their native language. The charity also provides one-off assistance for vulnerable individuals, including funding for youth hostel stays, return bus tickets to France, or supermarket vouchers for essentials.
A particular focus is placed on mental health. The organisation offers affordable or free psychological consultations for isolated or elderly individuals who face financial or linguistic challenges. Jerome highlights the importance of this service: “Mental health issues often require longer conversations, and it’s easier for patients to open up in their own language.” Additionally, the Espace Santé Jeunes (ESJ) initiative provides confidential psychological support for French-speaking youth aged 13-25 every Friday afternoon.
Beyond Medical Care
In addition to healthcare, Dispensaire Français extends its support to other areas of need. The charity helps low-income residents with heating bills, arranges home visits for the elderly, and organises monthly free meals to bring the community together. Plans are in place to introduce cultural events and games nights to combat loneliness during the winter months.
The charity also offers legal and administrative assistance, such as finalising pension files, navigating NHS registration, or even coordinating returns to France when necessary. Jerome noted a rise in demand for these social services, particularly for food assistance, as the cost-of-living crisis impacts vulnerable households.
Royal Support and a Legacy of Care
Since its establishment in 1867, Dispensaire Français has evolved from a hospital on Soho’s Shaftesbury Avenue to a comprehensive support system for French speakers in London. Despite financial challenges over the years, the charity has continued to serve its community with the help of British royal patronage, most recently from the Duchess of Edinburgh.
For French speakers in Hammersmith & Fulham, Dispensaire Français remains a beacon of hope and support. As Jerome explained, “Our goal is prevention first and assistance second. We aim to guide patients through the NHS while offering them care and advice in their own language.”
