Alexandra Park launches crowdfunder for new wetland boardwalk in north London

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help build a new boardwalk through wetlands at Alexandra Park in north London. The Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust and the Friends of Alexandra Park are aiming to raise £10,000 before 15th June for the project, which would create a walkway through the wetland area in the south-east corner of the park.

Organisers say all donations made during the campaign will be matched. The proposed boardwalk is intended to improve access to the wetland and create a safer route to birdwatching areas for visitors.

Mark Evison from the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust said the walkway would help connect people with the wildlife habitat while improving accessibility within the park. The wetlands project forms part of a wider rewilding programme at Alexandra Park focused on supporting amphibians, birds, insects, aquatic wildlife and native plants.

Earlier stages of the work received support from the Mayor of London’s Rewild London Fund. Patricia Moody, chair of the Friends of Alexandra Park, said she hoped the new route would be enjoyed by visitors for generations to come.

Projects focused on connecting Londoners with urban wildlife have expanded across the capital, including the recently opened children’s natural play area at Woodberry Wetlands. The wetlands project arrives as more London boroughs place greater attention on biodiversity and habitat recovery, including Waltham Forest’s declaration of a nature emergency. The renewed focus on wetlands and habitat restoration also follows wider conservation work across the UK, including new guidance published to support beaver protection efforts.
