National Gallery extends summer opening hours
Visitors to the National Gallery will be able to spend longer exploring its collection this summer after the London institution announced extended opening hours throughout July and August. From 3 July until 31 August, the gallery will remain open until 7pm every day, with Friday opening hours continuing until 9pm as part of a new programme called National Gallery Summertime.
The initiative is designed to give visitors greater flexibility during the summer months, whether they are stopping by after work, visiting London, heading to the theatre or looking to spend an evening in Trafalgar Square.
Those who cannot make it to Trafalgar Square in person can also explore the collection through the Gallery’s online tour, which allows people to view every display room remotely. The summer programme follows a strong period for the institution, with recent figures showing a significant increase in visitor numbers at the National Gallery.
Alongside the permanent collection, visitors will also be able to explore the Gallery’s Zurbarán exhibition, while shops, exhibitions, restaurants and bars across the site will remain open later into the evening.
The Gallery said the extended hours respond to demand for more flexible visiting times, particularly from Londoners and commuters who are unable to visit during traditional daytime opening hours.
Creative workshops will also continue throughout the summer at the Roden Centre for Creative Learning. Upcoming sessions include Life Drawing for Beginners on 10 July, Still Life for Beginners on 13 July and Drawing Without Fear workshops on 8 and 14 July.
Food and drink venues will remain open during the evening programme, including Locatelli, Bar Giorgio, Ochre, the Espresso Bar, and the Café, allowing visitors to combine a gallery visit with dinner or drinks in central London. The Gallery’s Supporters’ House will remain open until 7.30pm throughout the summer period, providing a space for members to meet for post-work drinks, dinner or pre-theatre gatherings overlooking Trafalgar Square.
National Gallery Summertime forms part of the Gallery’s wider commitment to broadening access to its collection and encouraging new ways for audiences to engage with art, culture and creativity.
