Pigeon feeding ban outside tube stations considered by council

Kensington and Chelsea council is considering a ban on feeding a pigeon outside some tube stations due to the mess the birds could leave. This comes following resident feedback over the nuisance that feeding pigeons has reportedly caused in the area with the council. The droppings of pigeons, as well as discarded food, can bring rats and insects. This can cause hygiene issues.

The droppings can also deface buildings and corrode stonework, as well as making the pavements slippery.

A previous consultation on the issue and how to deal with it revealed a great deal of support for a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that would prohibit feeding wildlife in certain areas of the borough.

A PSPO refers to legal powers introduced in 2014 that would allow local authorities to restrict certain activities in public spaces. The orders would last three years but can be renewed after that.

If introduced, the pigeon feeding ban could apply outside South Kensington and Gloucester Road tube stations as well as the area near Holland Park at the junction with Kensington High Street. Anyone feeding a pigeon in these areas could face a fixed penalty notice of £100 or up to £1,000 if prosecuted.

The council will hold a public consultation before it can implement it. Click here for more information.
