Lillie Road Recreation Ground earns Green Flag status as Hammersmith & Fulham reaches record 26 award-winning parks
Hammersmith & Fulham has reached a record 26 Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces after Lillie Road Recreation Ground was recognised under the national quality scheme.
The latest award means the borough now has more Green Flag sites than ever before, with the accolade recognising parks that meet nationally recognised standards for management, maintenance, safety, accessibility, and environmental quality.
The Green Flag Award, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is considered one of the UK’s leading benchmarks for well-managed public parks and open spaces. Sites are independently assessed across a range of criteria, including cleanliness, biodiversity, heritage, community value, and visitor experience.
Lillie Road Recreation Ground joins 25 other Hammersmith & Fulham parks that have retained Green Flag status across Fulham, Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush, White City, and West Kensington.
The council says the recognition comes alongside continued investment in public open spaces. Between 2025 and 2028, it plans to spend £8.3 million upgrading playgrounds across the borough’s 95 play areas. Planned improvements include new play equipment and the replacement of Ravenscourt Park’s paddling pool with a new water play facility.
Alongside playground improvements, a further £1.1 million is being invested in park infrastructure. Planned works include upgraded footpaths, new recycling bins, additional bug hotels, and updated signage intended to improve both visitor experience and biodiversity.
Hammersmith & Fulham Cabinet Member for the Environment, Arts and Culture, Councillor Bora Kwon, said the latest Green Flag award reflected the quality of the borough’s parks and the work carried out by council teams, volunteers, and local Friends groups.
The council is also preparing to launch a customer satisfaction survey inviting residents to comment on their local parks and suggest future improvements.
Green Flag sites across the borough include Bishops Park, Ravenscourt Park, Wormwood Scrubs, Hammersmith Park, South Park, Wendell Park, Brook Green, Parsons Green, Normand Park, and Marcus Garvey Park, among others.
