Varvara Tarasova brings intimate piano recital to 1901 Arts Club in Waterloo

London’s classical music scene is often associated with grand concert halls, famous orchestras and prestigious festival stages. Yet some of the city’s most memorable performances take place in much smaller rooms, where audiences sit just a few feet from the musicians and every detail of the performance becomes visible.

That is precisely the attraction of the 1901 Arts Club in Waterloo, which welcomes pianist Varvara Tarasova for a solo recital on Wednesday 10th June.

For audiences unfamiliar with her work, Tarasova is one of those musicians whose career quietly spans several countries, conservatoires and concert stages. Born in St Petersburg, she studied at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory before continuing her training in London at the Royal College of Music, where she graduated with honours and received a full scholarship.

Over the course of her career she has won more than 15 international piano competitions and performed across Europe, Russia, the United States and Brazil. Her achievements include the Hopkinson Gold Medal, the Soirée d’Or Award and a succession of international competition prizes that helped establish her reputation as one of the most accomplished pianists of her generation.

In 2017 she released a recording of Brahms and Schumann on Champs Hill Records, attracting praise for both her technical command and musical imagination. Gramophone magazine remarked that, in an era where virtuosity is often taken for granted, it is Tarasova’s imagination that distinguishes her from many of her contemporaries.

What makes her appearance at the 1901 Arts Club particularly interesting is the setting itself.

Unlike larger venues, the Edwardian salon offers a very different listening experience. The audience is close enough to observe the physical relationship between performer and instrument, something often lost in larger auditoriums. The result is a style of music-making that feels closer to the nineteenth-century salon tradition, where audiences encountered musicians in intimate surroundings rather than vast public halls.

Spend an evening in a room like this and you begin to notice things that can easily disappear in a larger venue. A slight hesitation before a phrase, a change of colour in the sound, even the performer’s physical relationship with the instrument becomes part of the experience.

Tarasova’s programme reflects that spirit. Her recital includes works by Scarlatti, Debussy and Tchaikovsky, composers whose music rewards close listening and whose contrasting styles allow a pianist to display both technical brilliance and interpretative depth.

A pianist can fill a concert hall with sound. A room like this allows the audience to hear something more personal. That may be one reason why musicians of Tarasova’s standing continue to appear in venues such as the 1901 Arts Club despite having access to far larger stages.

Varvara Tarasova performs at the 1901 Arts Club, Waterloo, on Wednesday 10th June. Doors open at 6.30pm and the recital begins at 7.30pm.
