Wandsworth Council proposes new traffic measures to tackle congestion in Putney
Wandsworth Council has outlined a new package of proposed traffic measures aimed at reducing congestion in Putney following months of consultation with residents, businesses, and community groups.
The council says the proposals have been developed in response to widespread concerns about delays on key routes including Putney High Street, Putney Bridge Road, and Lower Richmond Road, as well as increasing traffic on surrounding residential streets.
According to the council, detailed technical reviews have been carried out to assess traffic conditions before identifying a series of targeted interventions designed to improve traffic flow while maintaining road safety.
Among the measures under consideration is relocating the pedestrian crossing on Putney Bridge and submitting a revised traffic signal layout to TfL in an effort to increase the amount of green time available for vehicles. The council is also proposing to restore the previous operating hours for the bus lane on Putney Bridge Road and remove cycle wands along the route.
Elsewhere, new CCTV enforcement is being considered for the existing “Access Only” restrictions on Putney Embankment to discourage unauthorised through traffic. The council also says it is exploring additional ways to reduce rat-running and queue-jumping on roads around Lower Richmond Road.
Alongside these proposals, Wandsworth Council intends to progress several highway improvements. These include removing the traffic island outside Snappy Snaps to create additional road space on Putney High Street, reinstating two exit lanes from Putney Bridge Road onto Putney High Street, introducing new lane markings near Putney Station to improve traffic movement and widening the carriageway outside TK Maxx.
The council says it considered whether the previous road layout could simply be reinstated but concluded that doing so would not comply with current TfL requirements, would not fully address congestion issues and would involve significant costs.
Any changes affecting roads managed by Transport for London will require TfL approval before they can be introduced. Wandsworth Council says it will continue working with residents, local businesses and community groups as the proposals are refined before any final decisions are made.
