Art Fund Museum of the Year finalists announced
The UK’s museums that could win the £120,000 prize Art Fund Museum of the Year title have been announced. Norwich Castle Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, Plymouth’s The Box, and two museums in London, The National Gallery and V&A East Storehouse have all been nominated for what is, according to the BBC, “believed to be the world’s largest museum prize.
Jenny Waldman, director of Art Fund, said that the shortlisted museums showed “extraordinary creativity and innovation,” adding that she hoped the announcement of the shortlist would encourage others to visit the finalists as well as other museums in their area.
“From opening up world-leading collections to connecting with communities of all ages through ambitious exhibitions and programmes, each one offers something special,” Waldman said. “We are thrilled to celebrate their achievements as finalists.”
Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery recently reopened following a five-year redevelopment, now making it the country’s most accessible castles, boasting rooms that reveal what life was like in the 12th Century.
The Box celebrated its fifth birthday last September. The venue is a museum, gallery, and archive, showcasing Plymouth’s history.
The winner of the Art Fund Museum of the Year will be announced on 25th June at a ceremony in London at the Cutty Sark. Each of the other finalists will receive £20,000.
The prize comes from members of Art Fund who buy a National Art Pass, along with those who support its work. Last year’s winner was Beamish, The Living Museum of the North in County Durham.
