London Life Hike returns to Southwark Park to fund defibrillators and CPR training across London
Londoners will have the chance to raise money for life-saving community projects this September as the London Life Hike returns with routes designed for both families and experienced walkers.
Support for ambulance charities has remained strong in recent years, with marathon runners previously raising more than £30,000 to support emergency care projects across London. The fundraising effort comes at a time when ambulance services are also expanding facilities in parts of London to support growing demand. The walk also shines a light on the wider emergency response network that helps save lives across the capital every day.
Organised by the London Ambulance Charity, the event takes place on Saturday 26 September and starts and finishes at Southwark Park. Participants can choose between a 6km family-friendly route and a longer 21km walk through central London.
Money raised will help fund projects aimed at improving cardiac arrest survival rates, including the installation of more public-access defibrillators and CPR training for local communities. Samantha Palfreyman-Jones, Head of Community Resuscitation and a paramedic with London Ambulance Service, said immediate CPR and access to a defibrillator remain the most effective ways to improve survival when someone suffers a cardiac arrest.
The 6km route includes a children’s Explorer Challenge activity trail and has been designed to be accessible for wheelchair users. Those taking on the 21km route will pass several well-known landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and Shakespeare’s Globe while following sections of the River Thames.
Pauline Cranmer, Chief Paramedic, said the event offers people of all ages and abilities an opportunity to support ambulance services while helping fund projects that can save lives across London communities.
Previous London Life Hike events have raised tens of thousands of pounds to support local communities and increase access to life-saving equipment.
Registration costs £10 for adults, £5 for children and £25 for a family ticket. Children under five can take part free of charge. The charity is also seeking volunteers to help marshal the event or assist at the start and finish areas. People can sign up in advance or attend on the day at the Southwark Park Bandstand.
