Dogs age like us, right down to the molecules in their blood

A dog dies, on average, five to six times sooner than their owner. That gap, uncomfortable as it is for anyone who has ever owned man’s best friend, has just turned out to be scientifically useful. Researchers working with the Dog Aging Project have found that the same blood chemistry linked to earlier death in humans also predicts earlier death in dogs, a discovery that gives scientists a much faster way to study how ageing actually works.

The findings, published in The Journals of Gerontology, come from blood samples taken from 937 dogs enrolled in the project’s Precision Cohort, a group of pets across the United States followed annually since birth or adoption, with owners submitting detailed survey data and, for this subset, blood drawn at yearly vet visits. Researchers screened 133 metabolites, the small molecules produced by ordinary cellular processes, and found that 23 of them were significantly associated with how soon a dog died.

When they compared those 23 markers against five separate published studies of human mortality using the same kind of blood analysis, the patterns lined up. The correlation between the risk signals in dogs and the equivalent signals in humans ranged from 0.46 to 0.74 across the five studies, a strength of agreement the researchers themselves called striking.

The logic behind using death as a starting point is more practical than it sounds. Death is unambiguous in a way that other measures of ageing rarely are. Working backward from that single, clear outcome lets researchers ask which biological processes, metabolism, inflammation, cellular stress responses, were already shifting before it happened.

What makes the dog data genuinely useful to human researchers is speed. The mortality analysis in dogs was built from 104 deaths tracked over an average follow-up of just 2.6 years. The human studies it was checked against needed between 8 and 22.5 years of follow-up, with some cohorts tracked for nearly three decades, to accumulate comparable evidence. A dog’s shorter lifespan, roughly 12 to 13 years against a human’s 70-odd, means researchers can watch an entire biological arc play out in a fraction of the time it takes to study people directly.

Dogs also share something cats and most other pets do not: they live inside their owners’ actual routines. A dog’s diet, exercise, sleep patterns, and stress exposure tend to track its owner’s own, which means variation among dogs captures something closer to the variation researchers actually care about in humans, rather than the comparatively narrow, controlled conditions of a laboratory animal.

None of it would exist without the roughly 50,000 owners across the United States who have enrolled their dogs in the wider Dog Aging Project, a subset of whom agreed to yearly blood draws for the Precision Cohort specifically.

The Dog Aging Project’s own rapamycin trial is already testing whether these biomarkers can be moved, not just measured.
