Cremorne Wharf to become public park
Construction at Cremorne Wharf in Lots Road is now “substantially complete,” says Tideway, as the site is on its way to become a new public park. The site, also home to the Thames Tideway Tunnel, is almost an acre in size, and will feature seating, planting, trees, and play areas, according to the BBC.
The tunnel is responsible for keeping tens of millions of tonnes of raw sewage from polluting the river. The development would be temporary, it added, with potted plants and movable structures, allowing Cremorne Wharf to be used as a wharf in the future.
The proposals were approved by Kensington & Chelsea’s planning committee, despite objections from the Port of London Authority who wanted to know what the plans from the council for the end of the proposed period were. A new pedestrian link to the Thames Path will be created via the part-demolition of a western boundary wall.
The park will be open daily from 7:30am until dusk, with a park-keeper overseeing the space along with patrols by Kensington & Chelsea’s Parks Police Service.
Thames Tideway says that while construction at Cremorne Wharf Depot is “mostly complete,” you may still see some of its staff working to bring the “super sewer” into operation and “undertake testing work on the new system.” It added that its staff will be returning “at a later date” to install the new gates to the front of the pumping station, designed by artist Jo Chapman.
The Lots Road Pumping Station will continue to be operational as a Thames Water site.
