Drivers urged to prepare for summer traffic delays after motorists face hours-long motorway queues

Motorists are being encouraged to prepare for lengthy summer traffic delays by carrying a small kit of essential supplies in their vehicles, following recent reports of drivers spending up to nine hours stranded on the M25.

Breakdown provider Start Rescue says hot weather, heavy holiday traffic and unexpected incidents can quickly turn even routine journeys into extended waits, making it important for drivers to be ready before setting off.

Among the items motorists are advised to keep in their cars are bottled water, sunscreen, non-melting snacks, a basic first-aid kit, and a mobile phone charger. The company also recommends carrying any prescription medication that may be needed during an unexpected delay.

The advice comes as millions prepare for summer road trips, when higher temperatures can place additional strain on both vehicles and drivers.

Alongside packing emergency essentials, motorists are being reminded to carry out a few simple maintenance checks before travelling. These include ensuring tyres are correctly inflated and have sufficient tread, checking oil, coolant and windscreen washer fluid levels, and making sure the vehicle’s air conditioning is working properly before embarking on longer journeys.

According to Start Rescue, taking a few minutes to prepare can reduce the risk of breakdowns while making any unavoidable delays considerably more manageable.

The company says traffic congestion can develop with little warning, leaving motorists stationary for long periods without access to refreshments or roadside facilities. Having basic supplies available can help drivers remain comfortable and safe while waiting for roads to reopen.

Summer is traditionally one of the busiest periods on Britain’s road network, with increased holiday travel often coinciding with warm weather and motorway congestion. While drivers cannot always avoid traffic jams, vehicle checks before departure can help reduce the likelihood of mechanical problems adding to delays.
