Amber heat-health alert issued for London as temperatures climb into the mid-30s

Londoners are being urged to take extra care after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) placed the capital under an Amber heat-health alert as temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-30s.

The Amber heat-health alert, which forms part of a wider warning covering four regions of England, reflects an increased risk that prolonged hot weather could have a significant impact on health and social care services. Older people, those with existing medical conditions and other vulnerable residents are considered most at risk during the current spell of extreme heat.

Health officials are encouraging people to look out for relatives, neighbours, and friends who may struggle to cope with the high temperatures. Staying hydrated, limiting time in direct sunshine during the hottest hours of the day, and recognising the early signs of heat-related illness are among the key steps being recommended.

Residents can also reduce indoor temperatures by keeping curtains or blinds closed in sun-facing rooms and opening windows when conditions become cooler. Those planning exercise, walking pets or carrying out strenuous activities are advised to do so during the early morning or later evening rather than between 11am and 3pm.

The warning comes as London is also expected to experience moderate air pollution over the coming days. People living with lung conditions, along with adults affected by heart disease, are advised to reduce strenuous outdoor activity if pollution worsens or symptoms develop. Further information is available through the government’s air quality guidance and the AirText forecasting service.

A number of indoor cooling locations are available across Kensington and Chelsea, including Kensington Leisure Centre, Al-Manaar Culture Centre, The Venture Centre, Henry Dickens Community Centre, St John the Baptist, St Mary The Boltons, Refettorio Felix at St Cuthbert’s, the National Army Museum, and FlashPoint Centre.
