Amber Heat Warning Covers England and Wales as Temperatures Could Reach 38C
A four-day amber heat warning is now in force across large parts of England and Wales, with forecasters warning that temperatures could climb to 38C in some areas later this week.
The Met Office warning remains active until 23:59 BST on Thursday and reflects increasing confidence that exceptionally hot and humid conditions will continue through the middle of the week. The alert warns of likely population-wide impacts, including serious health risks including to pets, disruption to daily routines and additional pressure on infrastructure.
Temperatures above 30C are expected across much of the warning area, with some locations potentially reaching around 38C. Nights are also expected to remain unusually warm, particularly in urban areas where temperatures may struggle to fall below 20C or 21C. These conditions are known as tropical nights.
The warning area covers large parts of England and Wales, although some northern locations are included only on Wednesday and Thursday as the heat spreads further north.
The latest spell of hot weather follows an official heatwave declaration at Writtle, near Chelmsford in Essex. The area recorded three consecutive days above its local heatwave threshold of 27C.
The heat affecting the UK has developed as a much larger hot spell continues across continental Europe. Temperatures in parts of western France could reach 43C or 44C over the coming days, while Paris is forecast to approach 40C, a temperature that would be unprecedented there for June. Red heatwave alerts have been issued across around half of France.
By Tuesday, temperatures in the mid-30Cs are expected to become more widespread across England and Wales, with some places remaining above 20C overnight. High UV levels and elevated pollen counts are also expected in many areas.
The warning comes as experts continue to highlight how increasingly frequent weather extremes are affecting communities across the UK. Readers looking for practical guidance can also find advice on staying safe during periods of high temperatures.
As temperatures continue to rise, understanding how prolonged heat affects daily life is becoming an increasingly important part of preparing for summer in the UK. Explore more weather, climate and environmental coverage from across London and the UK at EyeOnLondon.
