Wandsworth Council increases HGV enforcement on weight restricted roads
Drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGV) are being warned that Wandsworth Council is increasing enforcement on weight restricted roads across the borough, with more penalty notices expected as CCTV monitoring is expanded this summer.
The council says it is targeting residential streets where residents have repeatedly raised concerns about large lorries using roads that carry a 7.5-tonne weight restriction. Enforcement is currently focused on locations in Southfields, Putney, Earlsfield, Battersea, and Tooting, where the authority says there is evidence of repeated non-compliance.
Councillor Daniel Hamilton, Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said the restrictions are intended to protect both residents and local infrastructure.
“Weight restriction road signs are there for a purpose, to protect residents and road surfaces from vehicles that are too big and heavy for local streets,” he said. “Residents are rightly concerned about HGVs damaging parked cars and putting pressure on smaller roads which leads to damage and potholes. So we’re stepping up our CCTV monitoring and issuing penalties to more drivers who break the rules and put people and roads at risk.”
According to the council, 29 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued during June 2026, with officials warning that the number is expected to rise as enforcement activity increases.
The authority uses roving CCTV vehicles to identify lorries entering roads where vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes are prohibited. After footage is reviewed and the vehicle classification confirmed, drivers found to have breached the restriction receive a £160 Penalty Charge Notice.
The council says the latest enforcement programme has been directed towards roads where unauthorised HGV traffic has become a particular concern for local residents.
Weight restrictions do not apply where heavy vehicles require legitimate access, such as making deliveries or reaching businesses or properties located on restricted roads.
Wandsworth Council says it will continue monitoring compliance across the borough and will consider introducing further measures where problems persist.
Residents who are concerned about heavy vehicles regularly using their street can contact the council to report the issue.
