London Cable Car reaches 20 million passenger milestone as TfL launches Golden Ticket giveaway
Transport for London (TfL) is marking a major milestone for the London Cable Car after confirming that the attraction has carried 20 million passengers since opening in 2012. To celebrate, TfL has launched a competition offering visitors the chance to win a 20-year Golden Ticket, providing either one-way or return journeys for the lucky winners.
Passengers can enter the free competition by scanning QR codes displayed at the cable car terminals or by submitting an online entry through TfL’s competition page.
Originally introduced ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the London Cable Car remains the UK’s only urban cable car. Over the past 14 years it has evolved from an Olympic transport project into one of London’s best-known visitor attractions, linking Greenwich Peninsula with the Royal Docks while offering panoramic views across the River Thames.
The crossing takes less than 15 minutes and provides convenient access to major destinations including The O2 and ExCeL London, making it popular with both visitors and Londoners travelling between the two sides of the river.
TfL says the attraction has also contributed to the continued regeneration of the surrounding area by improving connections and supporting new homes, businesses and leisure destinations on both banks of the Thames.
The cable car has expanded its visitor experiences well beyond a standard journey. Guests can choose the Glass Floor Experience, which offers views from around 90 metres above the river through a transparent cabin floor, while the Champagne Experience allows passengers to enjoy the skyline with a glass of sparkling wine during the crossing.
Special events have also become part of the attraction over the years, with the cabins hosting everything from live music and family activities to dining experiences, karaoke sessions, book launches and even marriage proposals.
Families visiting during August can also meet Engi-Bear, the cable car’s mascot, who will appear on site every Saturday. TfL is also running Engi-Bear’s Football Adventure, which includes a return journey, activity booklet, flag hunt, certificate and medal for participants. Saturday visitors can also upgrade their tickets to include face painting.
The milestone comes as the London Cable Car continues to receive strong visitor recognition, having recently earned Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award for a second consecutive year, placing it among the platform’s highest-rated attractions worldwide.
