National Fitness Day 24th September

Residents in Wandsworth are invited to take part in this year’s National Fitness Day by making the most of a range of free activities at leisure centres and other venues in the borough.  This year’s day will be on Wednesday 24th September. The theme will be “Powered by You,” aiming to highlight the role we all play in leading healthier and more active lifestyles.

Being moderately active, even for just 22 minutes a day, can mitigate many of the negative effects of sitting down for too long, research shows. Moderate activity can raise your heart rate, make you breathe faster, and feel warmer. Regular physical activity has been proven to reduce stress, improve mental health, and help people feel more energised, with even small changes, such as walking instead of driving short distances, or taking the stairs rather than a lift, can make a big impact over time.

This National Fitness Day, it is “easier than ever,” says Wandsworth, to move more thanks to a range of free activities in leisure centres and other venues throughout the borough. “Whether you’re a seasoned gym-goer or just starting out, there’s something for everyone, from open gym sessions and fitness classes to tennis socials and junior sports.”

Highlights include:

  • A five-day free membership for any sport or leisure centre in the borough
  • Cardio tennis at Wandsworth Common, Tooting Common or Leader’s Gardens
  • High-energy fitness classes like HIIT, bootcamp, and pump workouts
  • Activities for over 50s across the borough, including tone and stretch
  • Live Karma Yoga will be running a free Mindful Movement Class every Wednesday and a Chair Yoga Class

All activities are free and open to everyone and are delivered as part of the borough’s wider Wandsworth Moves Together strategy, aiming to make physical activity “more accessible and inclusive for all.” It also showcases the Council’s Access for All scheme, offering affordable and flexible ways to get active.
