TfL offers free Santander Cycles every Sunday throughout July as Cycle Sundays returns
As London sees a rise in daily cycling journeys, Londoners and visitors will be able to use Santander Cycles free of charge every Sunday throughout July after Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the return of its Cycle Sundays initiative.
Running on 5, 12, 19 and 26 July, the scheme gives riders a complimentary Santander Cycles Day Pass, providing unlimited 60-minute cycle hires within a 24-hour period. TfL says the campaign is aimed particularly at encouraging people who are new to cycling to explore London by bike.
The Day Pass, which normally costs £3.50, can be claimed by downloading the relevant promotional code from the Santander Cycles discounts page or the Santander Cycles app before redeeming it at any docking station terminal. Riders will still need to use a bank card or mobile payment to complete the transaction.
The promotional codes for Cycle Sundays are:
- CYCLEJULY5 — 5 July
- CYCLEJULY12 — 12 July
- CYCLEJULY19 — 19 July
- CYCLEJULY26 — 26 July
TfL is also making the offer available on Santander e-bikes, although these must be hired through the Santander Cycles app or with a membership key. The e-bike offer is only available to registered members, with membership remaining free to join.
To help people make the most of the initiative, TfL has highlighted more than 50 leisure cycling routes developed alongside organisations including British Cycling, Cycle Sisters, London Cycling Campaign and Sustrans. Suggested rides range from park routes through Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill to an accessible ride around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, along with a Cycleway loop linking Clapham Common and Battersea Power Station.
Cyclists can also access the routes through Strava and komoot, where journey guidance, route mapping and ride information are available free of charge through the TfL Cycle Sundays Club. Rides logged on Strava also contribute anonymous cycling data that TfL uses to help plan future cycling improvements.
The initiative forms part of TfL’s wider investment in cycling across London. The capital now has more than 441 kilometres of strategic cycle routes, compared with around 90 kilometres in 2016, while a new Santander Cycles operating contract due later this year will introduce a refreshed app, updated docking stations, additional e-bikes and new ways to hire bikes.
The continued expansion follows sustained growth in cycling across the capital, with daily cycling journeys rising significantly since 2019, while separate figures have shown continued cycling growth within the City of London.
Further information, route maps and TfL’s free online Cycle Skills course are available via the official TfL Cycle Sundays webpage.
