PlayStation users in UK & Ireland required to verify age
British and Irish PlayStation users will be subject to new age verification policies, Sony has revealed. The company said it isn’t making a blanket requirement, but said that work to confirm age will be required for users to gain access to “communication, broadcasting, and certain in-game features,” from June 2026.
That means essentials for both social and online gamers, including joining a party, voice chatting, text messages, or using third-party programs including Discord. Certain in-game communication tools, including sharing user-generated content or chats, will also require an age check for PlayStation users.
While the age verification will only be enforced from the summer, users are already seeing prompts asking them to verify their age on their PlayStation. “Verify your age to keep using communication features,” the message reads.
“At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are committed to creating safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting privacy and giving players and parents meaningful control over their gaming experience,” it goes on to say. “As part of our compliance with global regulations, you’ll need to verify your age later this year to continue using PlayStation communication features, such as messages and voice chat. You will still be able to access other PlayStation services, like games, trophies, and the Store, if you do not verify your age.”
