Twenty-five students from Hammersmith & Fulham have been given an early insight into careers in healthcare through a work experience programme at Imperial College London. The students visited the university during the summer as part of the H&F Pathway Bond, an initiative designed to connect young people with employers and career opportunities across the borough.
The placements were delivered through Imperial’s Widening Access to Careers in Community Healthcare (WATCCH) programme, which opened places specifically to H&F students through the Pathway Bond.
During the experience, students took part in discussions with healthcare professionals and practical clinical sessions, including blood-taking. They also completed a practice university interview using the format commonly associated with medical school applications.
Each student has also been matched with a current Imperial healthcare student who will act as a mentor, providing support as they prepare for university applications next year.
The opportunity is part of Upstream London, H&F Council’s inclusive economic growth strategy and joint venture with Imperial College London. The wider programme has helped attract £6 billion in investment and contributed to the creation of more than 17,200 jobs.
The Pathway Bond has also delivered 300 work placements for young people from the borough this summer through partnerships with employers.
For students considering medicine and other healthcare careers, the Imperial experience offers more than a glimpse inside a university. Practical sessions, conversations with professionals and ongoing mentoring can help young people understand what these careers involve and what they need to do to reach them.
