Greenlandic PM rebukes Trump
The Greenlandic PM has issued a clear rebuttal to US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that America could take the Arctic island. “Greenland is ours,” Múte Bourup Egede said in a Facebook post in both Greenlandic and Danish, that its citizens were neither American nor Danish but Greenlandic, and that they would decide their future by themselves.
The post came after a direct appeal from Trump to the island’s residents at a speech to Congress earlier this week. Trump’s address came just a week after Greenland’s parliamentary elections. The president offered support for its self-determination while also expressing a wish to seize the territory.
“We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” he said, adding that he promised to “keep you safe,” and “make you rich.” He said that America would “take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”
His administration, he revealed, were making efforts to acquire it from Denmark, an ally of the USA. He stated that Washington was “working with everybody involved to try to get it.”
“We need it really for international world security. And I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” Trump said.
But Greenlanders are worried and offended by what they see as threats to take their homeland. The island is rich in minerals and is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark.
When asked about the comments by Trump, the Foreign Minister of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that he did not believe Greenlanders wished to break away from Denmark only to become “an integrated part of America.”
